Gravesend Man Sentenced to Jail for Raping Woman After Night Out

A Longfield man has been imprisoned after sexually assaulting a woman he had met during a night out in Gravesend.

Rhys Cheal, 26, was sentenced to four years and six months in prison after being found guilty of rape. The victim, who had been socializing with friends in Gravesend on August 21, had planned to go home with a female friend. However, Cheal, whom she had known previously, had been following her around and offered to take her home.

When the woman’s friend asked to join them, Cheal claimed that she was feeling ill and needed to go home. Instead, he took her to an address in Longfield where she fell asleep, only to wake up to find him raping her.

After admitting to the crime over the phone, Cheal was arrested on December 3 and charged with rape. Despite pleading not guilty, he was convicted on June 21 following a trial at Woolwich Crown Court.

In addition to his prison sentence, Cheal will also be placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.

Detective Constable Stephanie Wilson, who led the investigation, praised the victim for her bravery in reporting the crime and supporting the investigation until Cheal was brought to justice.

She also urged anyone who has been a victim of sexual assault to come forward and report it to the authorities. “We have trained officers who will take steps to keep you safe and then act to make sure offenders cannot go on to harm others,” she said.
