Dartford’s Europa Weightlifting Gym and Youth Club Reopens After Five-Year Renovation Project Led by Former Olympian Andrew Callard

Dartford’s Europa Weightlifting Gym and Youth Club is set to make a triumphant return after a five-year renovation project led by former Olympian Andrew Callard. The community gym and youth center, known for training Team GB medalists, is finally ready to reopen its doors to the public.

Callard, who competed in the 1992 Olympics, has been the driving force behind the revitalization of the “cold and damp” facility in Temple Hill. The revamped center, set to open next month, boasts a state-of-the-art 3G football pitch, cardio room, dance studio, weightlifting room, and main gym area.

In 2019, Callard joined forces with Temple Hill Youth Club to create a vision for the center, determined to address the deteriorating condition of the building. With the help of architect Jeremy Sparrow, the project expanded to include extensions, an outside training area, and more.

However, the journey to the grand reopening was not without its challenges. Funding issues, Covid-19, and a burglary that resulted in the loss of £30,000 worth of equipment posed major setbacks. Thanks to additional funding from Kent Community Foundation, Veolia, Sport England, and Dartford CIL, the project was able to continue.

The final hurdle came when the Covid-19 pandemic caused costs to skyrocket and original contractors to drop out. Thanks to the hard work of Ian Silvera and James Woodland from Sport England, the project was able to secure the necessary funding to complete the internal work.

As the finishing touches were being made, Callard even had to chase off a potential thief who was lurking around the container storing all the gym equipment.

The long-awaited reopening is scheduled for Saturday, February 3 at 10am, with an open invitation for the public to come and experience the variety of activities the center has to offer, including weightlifting, aerial, hoop, and dance classes. It’s clear that Callard’s determination, along with the support of the community and various organizations, has resulted in a new and improved facility that will continue to train and inspire athletes for years to come.
